“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.” - Brené Brown
Most business owners want more visibility, but unintentionally sabotage it with habits that keep them hidden. The good news? These mistakes are easy to fix once you know what they are.
Here are the seven I see most often when working with founders, entrepreneurs and small teams.

1. Waiting until you feel “ready”
If you wait until you feel confident, polished or perfect, you’ll be waiting forever. Visibility grows through action, not preparation.
Fix: Start small. Share one insight, one story, one win. Momentum builds confidence.
2. Talking about what you do, not why it matters
People don’t buy services, they buy outcomes. They want to know the difference you make.
Fix: Shift from “here’s what I offer” to “here’s the impact this creates and why it's going to transform your life or your business.”
3. Only showing up when you have news
PR isn’t a tap you turn on when you launch something. Journalists and audiences trust people who show up consistently. I like to think of it as having a 'drip-drip' effect.
Fix: Share regular commentary, insights and stories, not just announcements.
4. Hiding behind the brand
Logos don’t build trust. People do. If your audience never sees the human behind the business, they won’t connect.
Fix: Share your perspective, your values, your voice. You are what makes the difference.
5. Overthinking every post, pitch or paragraph
Perfectionism kills visibility. While you’re polishing, someone else is publishing.
Fix: Give yourself a time limit and then hit publish.
6. Not repurposing your best content
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every week. Most people never see your content the first time.
Fix: Turn one idea into a blog, a LinkedIn post, a quote graphic, a pitch or a reel.
7. Trying to do PR alone
Visibility is easier (and far more enjoyable!) when you have support, accountability and a plan.
Fresh eyes and honest feedback make all the difference.
Fix: Build a rhythm that supports you, whether that’s a mentor, a coach, a peer group or a simple monthly plan you stick to.
The bottom line
Visibility isn’t about shouting. It’s about showing up in a way that people can actually see, understand and genuinely connect with you. When you fix these seven mistakes, you stop hiding and start being seen as the expert you already are.
